What These Events Mean for the Market
RBI Monetary Policy (MPC)
The six-member Monetary Policy Committee meets six times a year and sets the repo rate. A rate cut usually lifts rate-sensitive stocks — banks, NBFCs, autos and realty — while a hike or a hawkish tone can weigh on them.
CPI & WPI Inflation
Retail (CPI) inflation is released by MoSPI around the 12th of each month and is the RBI’s main target (4% ± 2%). Wholesale (WPI) inflation follows around the 14th. Inflation readings shape expectations for the next RBI decision.
GDP Growth
Quarterly GDP estimates are released by the National Statistics Office at the end of February, May, August and November. Stronger growth supports earnings expectations across the market.
Union Budget
Presented on 1 February, the Budget sets tax rates, government spending and the fiscal deficit target. Announcements on capital expenditure, taxes on capital gains and sector incentives can move stocks sharply on the day.
US Federal Reserve
Fed rate decisions influence global risk appetite, the dollar and foreign portfolio (FII) flows into Indian equities.
